Sarah answered PGN-C questions about the origins and meaning of the term cooking shark.
Picky Grouchy Non-Cook: What is a Cooking Shark? Sarah Halweil: One who purports to have no cooking experience but is actually a stellar preparer of edibles. The shark's reasons could be: The person is unsure or insecure about their cooking skills but is actually quite capable, or the person just likes having others cook for them and does not like the tasks of creating, shopping, preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning. PGN-C: Could you describe how and why you came up with the term? Sarah Halweil: I was once called a pool shark in my regular pool playing days (an undeserved compliment) but more specifically, I was once "sharked" in the pool hall of the Oasis Brewery in Boulder, CO. A guy asked my friend and me to teach him and his friend the game of pool. There was no money involved but after a few lessons their skills improved unrealistically. PGN-C: Do you think there is hope for the Cooking Shark? Sarah Halweil: Totally. Especially since she is so cool and thoughtful. PGN-C: Oh! Someone's fin is surely blushing. Have you ever coined any other terms? Sarah Halweil: My husband reminded me of two. The first is "spinach mouth". This is when the oxalic acid from spinach creates a chalky coating in the mouth and on the teeth. And the second is, "cabbage belly" or "Brussel belly". This is when one eats too much cabbage or too many Brussels sprouts and is uncomfortable. |

Sarah has identified me, her PGN-C interviewer, as a cooking shark. How can it be? Yet clearly Sarah is by no means a willy nilly person who makes things up about other people. For an open letter about my shark status, please click here.
